Taking the First Step: Advice on Asking for Help
Acknowledge That Help is Needed
Acknowledging that there is something in need of healing is the first step toward asking for help. Self-awareness is an essential component of the healing process when navigating mental health. Make sure that you take time out of your day to reflect on emotions that you have been feeling or behaviors that can correspond with certain mental health disorders. Here is a list of questions to ask yourself when reflecting on your mental health:
- How am I feeling today (mentally and physically)?
- What’s taking up most of my thoughts?
- Have these thoughts been impacting my everyday life?
- Have I been able to sleep?
- How do I handle negative thoughts?
- Am I engaging in any form of self-care?
Thinking about these questions and laying them out will help you to understand the mental state that you are in. It is necessary to come to terms with the issues or struggles that you have been experiencing. The awareness that you have created for yourself will help you with the process of asking for help.
Abolish the Inner Shame
Stop being so hard on yourself. We don’t judge those who ask us for help, so why do we judge ourselves when we need help?
Don’t listen to the shame that your mind and body are deceiving you into experiencing. It is imperative that you are aware that there is no shame in asking for help. Take time to recognize that you are not alone in struggling with mental health. The mental health stigma can be damaging in many ways. It can lead to isolation and the worsening of mental health disorders. Remind yourself that the stigma is false and it stems from a lack of understanding. Asking for help does not mean you are a failure or weak. It makes you a human being. Work on embracing the idea that there is no shame in wanting to go to therapy or wanting to seek help from others.
Aim for What You Deserve
Think about specific life goals, short-term or long-term, that you want or have wanted to reach. It doesn’t matter what the scale of the goal is but make sure to ask yourself if you can achieve these goals without getting proper help. It is also essential to consider that poor mental health can alter your brain chemistry and physical well-being. Untreated mental health concerns can cause significant adverse effects that you will notice in your daily life. Taking care of yourself is an act of self-love, and you can take care of yourself by being vulnerable and telling someone that you are struggling. By asking for help and getting treated accordingly, you are one step closer to reaching any life goals. Tell yourself that you deserve to be helped and that you deserve to achieve the goals that you have. You deserve the option of asking for help. You deserve the life you want and knowing that you deserve it is imperative.
Asking for Help
Asking for help is not giving up. It’s the opposite. Reaching out for help offers a new perspective that can change your life. Whether you are reaching out to a therapist or a friend, remember that you are the only one that can take that step toward improving your quality of life. Otherwise, no one can help you if they are unaware you are suffering with your mental health. Until someone is approached, it is the responsibility put on those suffering to take the plunge and be vulnerable. As uncomfortable as it is, asking for help can save your life. Start by researching resources online that can be useful in finding someone to turn to. It’s okay to start small. If you have a trusted close friend or family member, you can also turn to them for help. Once you have expressed your struggles to someone, that person can assist you in seeking further help if needed. Here are a few mental notes to remember when asking someone for help:
- Be open, honest, and vulnerable
- People WANT to help
- There is no shame in asking for help
- Focus on the goal, and don’t let fear take over
Ask for help because there are people who want to help. Ask for help because you deserve it. Ask for help because it can change the course of your life.
